Wellington City Mission · Move On To Where?

Wellington City Mission put its question straight onto Parliament's walls

Days out from the general election, Wellington City Mission didn't release a report on homelessness law. It projected one blunt question onto the Beehive and dared politicians not to answer it.

The TL;DR (too long; didn't read)

  • Ahead of the 7 November election, Wellington City Mission and agency EightyOne projected 'Move On To Where?' onto Parliament, challenging legislation passed under urgency that lets Police issue move-on orders to people sleeping rough.
  • A video message from Wellington City Missioner Rev Murray Edridge called on the Government to find real solutions rather than moving the problem out of sight, and the Mission says the law doesn't separate behaviour from circumstances.
  • The campaign asks political parties to publicly state their position and commit to removing rough sleeping from the legislation, and urges New Zealanders to raise it with local MPs. No reach, coverage or outcome figures have been reported.

A single projected question is far easier to photograph, share and remember than a press release explaining the legislation's flaws in detail.

Reducing a complex policy argument to one blunt question ('move on to where?') also puts the burden of answering back on the people making the law, rather than on the Mission having to make the whole case itself.
