Trend · The entry-level talent squeeze

AI is eating the junior marketing job. Here's how to stay ahead

AI: artificial intelligence

Gartner, Marketing Week and Digiday all reported the same worry in one week: entry-level marketing roles are shrinking as AI (artificial intelligence) takes over junior tasks. If you're a student, this one's about you.

The TL;DR (too long; didn't read)

  • Tasks like resizing, first drafts and reporting are being automated.
  • The industry is worried about losing its training ground.
  • Judgement, taste and strategy are becoming the entry ticket.

01

What's actually happening

Marketing Week reported that AI could wipe out ‘traditional’ entry-level jobs by 2030. Digiday describes a ‘runaway crisis’ in entry-level hiring, and Gartner says CMOs (chief marketing officers) must rethink entry-level talent.

02

Why it matters for everyone

Juniors become seniors. If no one learns the craft, the industry loses its future leaders. That's why some firms are rethinking apprenticeships rather than just cutting roles.

03

What you can do

Show judgement, not just output: explain why one idea is better than another, critique AI outputs, and show strategic thinking in your portfolio. (Tasks like the one below are good practice!)

Automation vs augmentation

AI can either replace human tasks (automation) or extend what people can do (augmentation). Augmentation tends to create more value and keeps humans central.

Here: Roles built on augmentation (human + AI) are more resilient than roles AI can fully automate.

Be honest, then look for the gap.

  2. 2

How would you prove good judgement to an employer?

    Need a nudge?

    Case studies, critiques, decisions explained.

  3. 3

What would a great AI-era marketing internship include?

    Need a nudge?

    Supervision, real decisions, feedback.

Your mini task

In 60–120 words: describe one portfolio piece that would show an employer your marketing judgement, not just your production skills. Say what it is, what decision it shows, and how AI fits in.
